Wet air scrubber air pollution control

The human impact on the environment has been a topic of discussion for the past 50 years. Climatologists predict that as much as two thirds of all Europeans will have their health impacted by extreme changes in weather by 2100. The extreme weather conditions and events are predicted to cause the death of 150000 people annually. The extreme change of the climate has already affected millions of people worldwide, causing seasonal allergies and an increase in bacterial infections, heat-related illnesses, illnesses from contaminated food and water. One of the main reasons for climate change is carbon emissions. Therefore, the reduction in carbon emissions would reduce the negative effects of manmade climate change. Among different pollution control methods, wet air scrubbing is the most promising.

Coal combustion has been proved to cause major detrimental effects on the environments. Coal combustion is a source of both carbon dioxide and air pollution. For many years, the idea of “clean coal” has been a dream for both environmentalists and coal companies. The reduction of emissions from coal factories would have a positive effect on the quality of air. Wet air scrubbers have been named as one of the possible solutions to the harmful emissions as they remove sulfur dioxide from coal-generated gas. Wet air scrubbers can be designed to collect particulate matter and/or gaseous pollutants. This constitutes one of the main advantages of wet air scrubbers – they are versatile and can be used in a great variety of different applications. They can be built in numerous configurations to provide the best treatment quality of polluted air.

Wet air scrubbers remove dust particles by capturing them in liquid droplets. The cleaning liquid that is used can be treated differently inside the scrubber; the droplets, or a mist, can be produced differently depending on the design of the scrubber. Another advantage of wet air scrubbing is the ability of the wet scrubbers to withstand high temperatures that are often present at coal factories. Moreover, wet scrubbers cool the flue gases which results in smaller overall size of equipment.

Scroiler™ is a new type of wet air scrubber that cleans air from gases, dust,

vapors and other admixtures using water or other cleaning liquid. Scroiler™ produces the cleaning mist differently from other scrubber systems, which results in running costs that are much lower than for a common wet air scrubber. We have several Scroiler™s installed on the funnels of the coal power station and on CHP (combined heat and power) boilers for high efficient cleaning of flue gases from ash and SOx. For example, we had installed a Scroiler™ system at the small coal CHP which provides small town with heat and energy. This CHP station is equipped with a 3 tons per hour capacity boiler and a mechanical stoker which consumes ordinary coal. The output power of CHP is 2.5 MW. We replaced cyclones with the Scroiler™ system to obtain the treatment quality of 99.95%.
