Venturi wet air scrubber is a pollution control device that utilizes the energy of an incoming gas stream in order to atomize scrubbing liquid. The venturi scrubber is made of 3 parts – a converging section, a throat section, and a diverging section. The gas flow enters the scrubber through the first section, where it gains velocity; the second section is an area where cleaning liquid is introduced. The scrubbed gas slows down and exits the scrubbers through the diverging section. Ejector venturi scrubber is a type of venturi scrubber that utilizes a preformed spray to scrub the polluted air. The operation of the ejector venturi scrubber is similar to that of a spray tower. However, there is only one nozzle in an ejector venturi scrubber, unlike many nozzles in a spray tower. The nozzle operates at high pressures and is aimed at the venturi throat section.
One of the benefits of the ejector venturi scrubber is the ability to move the processes gas without a fan or a blower. The partial vacuum that is created in the scrubber due to the Bernoulli effect. The vacuum is used to move the process gas through the scrubber as well as through the process system. The lack of a fan is beneficial for industries that produce exhaust gases that are corrosive or explosive.
The high efficiencies of the ejector venturi wet air scrubber are achieved by very high liquid-injection rates. The spray that passes through the venturi throat at a high pressure and forms liquid droplets that collect the pollutants from the inlet gas.
Ejector venturi scrubber is not effective at collecting submicrometer-sized particles as they can only capture particles larger than 1.0 µm in diameter. The particulate matter collection occurs via a contact of water droplets with pollution particles. The effectiveness of the scrubber may be increased by increasing nozzle pressure and the liquid-to-gas ratio. Like venturi scrubbers, the ejector venturi wet scrubber is not effective at gaseous pollutant collection as the contact time between the gas and the cleaning liquid is limited. However, they can be used for scrubbing of water-soluble gases.
There are numerous maintenance problems that often occur during operation. The main problem is corrosion – the surface of the ejector venturi scrubber, especially the throat section, is prone to corrosion as gas travels at a very high speed inside the scrubber. The abrasion problem may be remedied by the use of wear-resistant materials. Another maintenance problem is the need for entrainment separators to prevent excessive liquid carryover due to the high gas velocities.
