Researchers distinguish three types of wet air scrubbers applied to remove particulate pollutants in the chemical industries providing proper air pollution control. Air treatment devices such as scrubber systems are considered to be essential for chemical process industries.
All scrubbers fall into two classifications: wet air scrubbers and dry systems. The wet type is regarded as a perfect option for numerous industries because wet scrubbers offer a high level of efficiency.
Wet air scrubbers catch particulate pollutants and remove them by applying a special liquid or just water to a contaminated gas stream. A chemical additive is used in the water so that the pollutants react with it transforming them into a less dangerous compound. Sodium hydroxide, or caustic (NaOH), is a widely used chemical in scrubber system solution.
Additionally, some industries prefer using simple water as a solution for air treatment by wet scrubbers without applying chemical reagents. Currently, there are three main types of wet air scrubbers employed in the chemical process industries: jet venturi fume scrubbers, packed bed scrubber systems, and high-energy jet ventures. Herewith, each design of wet scrubbers is suitable for certain fields of application.
For instance, the jet venturi scrubber is considered to be the most basic air pollution control system. The operating principle is based on the liquid solution that passes through a nozzle and increases while the pressure decreases to atmospheric conditions. Thus, an area of low pressure appears that involves the gases in the head of the scrubber system.
Then the two-phase mixture is limited in the converging nozzle, and the two liquids are mixed in the throat of the wet air scrubber, while the solution immerses the gaseous particulate pollutants. “The clean fluid then increases to a gas through the diverging area, slowing as it achieves the outlet”.
The presence of a significant amount of noncondensable vapors in the majority of wet scrubber applications causes the jet scrubber to release its stream into a separator tank. This tank is large, allowing for a two-phase solution with adequate residence time to facilitate the separation of the gaseous phase from the liquid phase.
Finally, the jet venturi scrubber is perfect where bulk removal is required due to the benefits provided such as the concurrent flow and close contact between the phases. The air treatment of huge volumes is the reduction of most particulate pollutants exiting the wet air scrubber system.
